THE CLASSROOM

OUR INSTRUCTORS

Husband and wife team, Larry Mann and Wendy Williamson, are seasoned fly fishing instructors.  While teaching at Colorado Mountain College in Steamboat Springs in the 1990's, Larry developed a two credit fly fishing class that is still active today, currently taught by a former student.  Larry and Wendy met in Meeker, Colorado while guiding trout fishermen in 1995. In 1998, they moved to Wendy's hometown of Hayward, Wisconsin and began teaching at the Orvis Fly Fishing School in Kohler, Wisconsin until they opened their fly shop in 2004.  They continued guiding and offering fly fishing classes through their shop until 2021.  They have since continued their teaching/instructing in conjunction with Rivers of Recovery, a non-profit program for wounded veterans.

FLY FISHING FOUNDATIONS

With Larry Mann and Wendy Williamson

Ready to start fly fishing but don’t know where to begin? Feeling overwhelmed by gear, knots, flies, and casting? This class is designed exactly for you. Join renowned instructors Larry Mann and Wendy Williamson for an immersive, approachable full-day introduction to fly fishing hosted by Red Cedar Fly Fishing.

This 8-hour class breaks fly fishing down to the essentials, giving you the knowledge and confidence you need to hit the water and start catching fish on a fly rod!

What You’ll Learn

Throughout the day, you’ll build a solid foundation in all the fly fishing basics, including:

  • Essential knots and how to tie them

  • Intro to entomology and understanding what fish eat

  • Gear selection and how to use it properly

  • How to locate fish in rivers and lakes

  • Casting instruction with personalized coaching

  • On-water mindset and how to approach learning the sport without overwhelming yourself

The class includes classroom instruction at Brewery Nonic in Menomonie, WI, with scheduled breaks to step outside and practice casting. This structure keeps energy high, helps reinforce techniques, and ensures students retain information throughout the day. Weather permitting we will also venture down to the river to practice casting on water and get up close and personal with some of the aquatic food sources.

To make sure everyone receives individualized instruction, each class is limited to 8 students. This intimate setting allows Larry and Wendy to work hands-on with every participant, answering questions and providing direct feedback.
